Accretion flows around stellar mass black holes and neutron stars

چکیده

In this review, I summarize the main X-ray/hard X-ray properties of the accretion flows around black holes and neutron stars based on recent broad-band spectral and timing observations performed by the BeppoSAX and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellites. Emphasizing the spectral and timing similarities observed between black holes and neutron stars, I discuss on the most likely accretion geometry and emission processes associated with hard and soft spectral states. For black holes, in the hard state, the accretion geometry is more likely made of a truncated disk and a hot inner flow, in which thermal Comptonization takes place. The truncated disk is likely to be the dominant source of seed photons, and the site for the production of the reflection component observed. In soft states, the disk now extends closer to the compact object and is brighter in X-rays. The hard X-ray emission occurs through Comptonization of disk photons on a thermal/non-thermal electron distribution, generated in magnetic flares above the accretion disk. For neutron stars, similar accretion geometry and emission mechanisms may apply but the unavoidable radiation from the neutron star surface adds yet another component in the X-ray spectrum. It also acts as an additional source of cooling for the Comptonizing cloud, leading to softer spectra in neutron stars than in black holes.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Can stellar mass black holes be quark stars?

We investigate the possibility that stellar mass black holes, with masses in the range of 3.8M⊙ and 6M⊙, respectively, could be in fact quark stars in the Color-Flavor-Locked (CFL) phase. Depending on the value of the gap parameter, rapidly rotating CFL quark stars can achieve much higher masses than standard neutron stars, thus making them possible stellar mass black hole candidates. Moreover,...

Two-dimensional Radiation-hydrodynamic Model for Supercritical Disk Accretion Flows onto Neutron Stars

We performed two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic simulations of supercritical accretion flows around neutron stars (NSs). In contrast with the accretion flows onto black holes (BHs), we find that the shell-shaped high-density regions form around the NSs, since the radiation force is enhanced in the innermost regions. The enhanced radiation force drives strong outflows above and below the dis...

Advection-Dominated Accretion: Underfed Black Holes and Neutron Stars

We describe new optically thin solutions for rotating accretion flows around black holes and neutron stars. These solutions are advection-dominated, so that most of the viscously dissipated energy is advected radially with the flow. We model the accreting gas as a twotemperature plasma and include cooling by bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, and Comptonization. We obtain electron temperatures Te ∼ 1...

A Fallback Disk Model for Ultraluminous X-ray Sources

Current stellar evolution models predict that during the core collapse of massive stars, a considerable amount of the stellar material will fall back onto the compact, collapsed remnants (neutron stars or black holes), usually in the form of an accretion disk. This triggers rapid mass accretion onto, e.g., the black hole, and produces energetic explosions known as Gamma-ray bursts. However it i...
